Description
A sweet and savory baked bean dish combining brown sugar, ketchup, and mustard for a homespun accompaniment. Naturally vegetarian, this comfort food side pairs perfectly with meats or roast vegetables.
Ingredients
2 cans (398ml) navy beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup brown sugar (dark molasses)
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tbsp ketchup
1/4 cup melted butter
Optional: 1/4 cup puffed corn flakes
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
In a large bowl, combine beans, sugar, onion, mustard, ketchup, and melted butter
Mix until fully coated
Transfer to an ovenproof dish
Optionally top with puffed corn flakes
Bake for 45 minutes until bubbling and lightly caramelized
Notes
Use low-sodium canned beans if preferred
For richer depth, simmer mixture 5 minutes before baking
Substitute maple syrup for ketchup if avoiding processed ingredients
Store leftovers in airtight container up to 5 days
